The annual "Relay for Life" is a fundraising event run by the Cancer Council and was run on Saturday, 24 March. Camberwell Hockey Club entered a team, with Ron Yeates being our inspiration.

For those who don't know about the event, each team had to keep a baton moving around the football oval over the road from the Hawthorn Hockey Club, from 4.00 pm on Saturday through to 9.00 am the next day (plus the extra hour for the daylight saving time change).

It cost $15 per person to register, with all proceeds going to the Cancer Council.

It was great to get a big turnout from the Club to show our support for Ron and others who are dealing with cancer.

Keeping a baton moving for 18 hours is a tough task, especially through the early hours of the morning so ... to everyone who participated and donated, a very big thank you from Hally and myself. I have spoken to Ron who was thrilled with the support and thoroughly enjoyed himself. Couldn't wipe the smile off his face and the yellow jersey was prominent as he ensured he was the first survivor across the line in the opening lap!

The weather was kind for the most part as it looked fairly ominous after 2 laps in the pouring rain.

We achieved some 382 laps all up giving us total distance of 133.7 km!!! There was 1 guy in another team that completed 100 km on his own!!! So he has raised the bar for next year.

In all, the event raised $96K for cancer research which is just amazing. We raised nearly $1,000 for a great cause.

It was terrific to know that CHC played a part whilst enjoying themselves and catching up with fellow CHC members.

More information about the event can be found at Hawthorn Relay for Life 2007
